Have you ever wanted to invest your money in companies that make a difference to the environment – but didn’t know how? Leonardo DiCaprio showed us how large investors do it with his DivestInvest campaign – but how can we all actually do it?

This is how I did it.

Most people’s main assets are their home and their pensions. Pension funds are huge these days, some also committed to changing their investments through DivestInvest-like strategies.

I recently moved all my old pension pots from previous employers, every one of which were managed by different pension providers, into one account held with PensionBee.

Why Pensionbee? I had 3 very good reasons:

  1. They have a Future World fund that invests in companies generating revenue through low-carbon activities. The fund is managed by Legal & General, one of the biggest pension funds in the UK, who “has made a commitment to address climate change by engaging directly with the largest companies in the world who are critical to the shift to a low carbon economy.” I can now easily divest too!
  2. Unlike all of my previous providers, they collected all my old pensions for free into my PensionBee account and with minimal hassle for me. They emailed me all documents they needed me to e-sign, then kept me updated every time they received funds from one of my former pension providers. They also answered quickly any question I had.
  3. Also unlike my previous providers, they have a brilliantly easy-to-use website. You just log in and see immediately how much your fund is worth (how much you paid in vs the fund value at that moment in time), progress on any transfers and any other information you could possibly want to know. They also have a calculator where you can see how much your fund is likely to be worth at retirement by moving levers such as age, regular contributions and one-off contributions. Sweet!

Using your pension is a great and easy way to divest your investment and make your voice heard.
